Introduction

Income tax refunds for AY 2026-27 are being processed gradually on the income tax e-filing portal. Many taxpayers filing ITR-1 and ITR-4, especially lower refund cases, are seeing faster processing. However, refund timelines can differ from taxpayer to taxpayer depending on income details, refund amount, bank validation, AIS/Form 26AS matching and risk checks.

A refund is not issued merely because the ITR is filed. The return must be successfully e-verified, processed by the Income Tax Department and the refund must be sent to a validated bank account.

This article explains how taxpayers can check ITR processing status, refund status, bank account validation, refund failure and refund reissue for AY 2026-27.

Why Income Tax Refunds May Take Different Time

Refund processing is taxpayer-specific. Two people may file ITR on the same date, but refunds may not be processed on the same day.

Refund timing may depend on:

  • ITR form used;
  • refund amount;
  • income sources;
  • TDS/TCS matching;
  • AIS and Form 26AS data;
  • bank account validation;
  • PAN-bank account matching;
  • previous outstanding demand;
  • defective return issue;
  • high refund review;
  • system-based risk checks; and
  • whether the return was correctly e-verified.

Generally, simple ITR-1 and ITR-4 cases may process faster than complex ITR-2 and ITR-3 cases. However, this is not guaranteed.

Check ITR Processing Status

After filing and e-verifying your return, check whether the return has been processed.

Steps to Check ITR Status

  1. Visit the official income tax e-filing portal.
  2. Login using PAN/Aadhaar and password.
  3. Go to e-File.
  4. Select Income Tax Returns.
  5. Click View Filed Returns.
  6. Select AY 2026-27.
  7. Check whether the return is:
    • filed;
    • e-verified;
    • processed;
    • processed with refund;
    • defective;
    • revised; or
    • under processing.

If the return is processed, you should be able to download the intimation order.

What Is Intimation Under Section 143(1)?

After processing the ITR, the department issues an intimation under section 143(1). This intimation compares:

  • income reported in ITR;
  • tax calculated;
  • TDS/TCS;
  • advance tax;
  • self-assessment tax;
  • deductions;
  • refund claimed; and
  • refund/demand determined by CPC.

The intimation is generally available on the portal and is also communicated through email/SMS.

Practical Tip

Always download the intimation order and compare it with the ITR computation. If there is a mismatch, identify whether it is due to TDS mismatch, AIS mismatch, incorrect income, wrong bank account or any adjustment.

How to Check Refund Status

After the ITR is processed, taxpayers can check refund status on the e-filing portal.

Steps to Check Refund Status

  1. Login to the income tax e-filing portal.
  2. Go to Services.
  3. Select Know Refund Status or refund status service.
  4. Select the relevant assessment year, such as AY 2026-27.
  5. Submit the request.
  6. Check whether refund is:
    • under processing;
    • sent to refund banker;
    • credited;
    • failed; or
    • adjusted against demand.

Bank Account Validation Is Mandatory for Refund

A common reason for refund delay or failure is bank account issue.

The Income Tax Department sends refund only to a validated bank account that is eligible for refund. Therefore, taxpayers should check bank account status immediately after filing ITR.

How to Check Bank Validation

  1. Login to income tax e-filing portal.
  2. Go to My Profile.
  3. Select My Bank Account.
  4. Check bank account status.
  5. Ensure at least one bank account shows:
    Validated and Eligible for Refund
  6. Nominate the correct bank account for refund.

What Does “Validated and Eligible for Refund” Mean?

It means the bank account has been successfully validated and can receive income tax refund.

Your bank account should ideally have:

  • correct PAN linkage;
  • correct account number;
  • correct IFSC;
  • active account status;
  • bank validation completed;
  • nomination for refund;
  • name matching with PAN records.

If your bank account is not validated, refund may fail even if ITR is processed correctly.

Invalid IFSC/accountIncorrect details enteredRevalidate or add bank again

How to Revalidate Bank Account

If your bank account is not showing validated and eligible for refund, you can revalidate it.

Steps

  1. Go to My Profile.
  2. Click My Bank Account.
  3. Select the bank account.
  4. Click the three dots.
  5. Choose Revalidate.
  6. Enter/confirm bank details.
  7. Verify through OTP, where required.
  8. Wait for validation update.

If revalidation does not work, remove the bank account and add it again with correct details.

When Should You Visit the Bank?

Sometimes the issue cannot be solved only on the portal. You may need to visit your bank branch if:

  • PAN is not linked with bank account;
  • Aadhaar/PAN KYC is incomplete;
  • name in bank records is incorrect;
  • account is dormant;
  • mobile number is not updated;
  • email ID is not updated;
  • bank refuses validation due to KYC mismatch.

Ask the bank to complete KYC, update PAN, Aadhaar, mobile number and email ID. After bank-side update, return to the e-filing portal and revalidate the bank account.

Should You Add Multiple Bank Accounts?

It is useful to add all active bank accounts used by you in your ITR and validate them on the portal. However, one account should be nominated for refund.

Having more than one validated account may help if one account has issues later. But the refund is normally sent to the nominated account.

Refund Failed: What to Do?

If refund fails, the portal may show refund failure status. Common reasons include:

  • bank account not validated;
  • wrong account number;
  • IFSC mismatch;
  • PAN mismatch;
  • account closed;
  • account inactive;
  • account not nominated;
  • refund returned by bank.

Once refund failure is updated, you can raise a refund reissue request.

How to Raise Refund Reissue Request

Steps

  1. Login to the e-filing portal.
  2. Go to Services.
  3. Select Refund Reissue.
  4. Click Create Refund Reissue Request.
  5. Select the relevant assessment year.
  6. Choose the correct validated bank account.
  7. Submit the request.
  8. Complete OTP/e-verification.
  9. Track request status.

Refund reissue can be filed only when refund failure status is available. If refund has not failed yet, the reissue option may not work.

Can You Revise ITR for Bank Account Error?

If the return has not been correctly filed or bank details were wrongly reported, a revised return may be considered. However, revising the return sends the return for processing again, so it may take additional time.

For AY 2026-27, taxpayers should note that the revised return timeline has changed. From AY 2026-27 onwards, the revised return due date has been extended up to the end of the relevant assessment year.

Therefore, for AY 2026-27, the revised return may be filed up to 31 March 2027, subject to applicable law and portal availability.

This is important because many taxpayers still assume the old 31 December deadline. The 31 December deadline applied in earlier years, but the AY 2026-27 rule should be checked separately.

Check AIS and Form 26AS Before Filing or Revising ITR

AIS and Form 26AS are important for refund processing because they show tax credits and reported financial information.

Before filing or revising ITR, check:

  • salary TDS;
  • bank interest;
  • dividend income;
  • securities transactions;
  • tax deducted by employer;
  • tax deducted by bank;
  • advance tax;
  • self-assessment tax;
  • TCS;
  • high-value transactions;
  • refund history.

If incorrect information appears in AIS, submit AIS feedback. If Form 26AS shows wrong or missing TDS, contact the deductor or source agency for correction.

Fake Refund Links and Fraud Alerts

Taxpayers should be careful about fake refund messages.

The Income Tax Department does not ask taxpayers to enter bank details through random WhatsApp links, SMS links or unofficial websites.

Safety Checklist

  • Use only the official income tax e-filing portal.
  • Do not click suspicious refund links.
  • Do not share OTP.
  • Do not share PAN password.
  • Do not enter bank details on unknown websites.
  • Check refund only after login to official portal.
  • Verify email sender carefully.
  • Avoid using cyber cafés or unknown devices for ITR login.

Conclusion

Income tax refund processing depends on accurate ITR filing, successful e-verification, correct tax credit matching and proper bank validation. If your refund is delayed, do not panic immediately. First check whether your ITR is processed, whether intimation under section 143(1) is issued and whether your bank account is validated and nominated for refund.

If the refund fails, raise a refund reissue request only after the failure status is updated. If the ITR itself contains an error, consider filing a revised return within the applicable time limit.
