Hike Calculator

Calculate your salary hike percentage, CTC increase, target CTC and the real first-year gain after comparing take-home pay and job-change costs.

A bigger package does not always mean more money in hand. Compare both CTC and monthly take-home. Add new commute, rent or relocation costs to see whether the offer leaves you genuinely better off.

How to calculate salary hike percentage

The standard salary hike formula compares the increase with your old CTC:

Hike % = (New CTC − Current CTC) ÷ Current CTC × 100

If your current CTC is ₹5 lakh and the new CTC is ₹6 lakh, the increase is ₹1 lakh. ₹1 lakh divided by ₹5 lakh equals 0.20, so the salary hike is 20%.

CTC hike vs take-home salary hike

CTC is the employer’s total annual cost. It can include gross salary, employer PF contribution, gratuity, insurance, variable pay, joining bonus, stock benefits and other components. Take-home salary is the money credited to your bank after employee contributions, tax and other deductions.

Are you actually in profit after the hike?

A higher CTC can still produce a small take-home increase if the offer contains large variable pay, employer-side benefits or deductions. A new location may also add travel, rent or meal costs.

Practical comparison: ask for the full salary structure and estimated monthly take-home—not only the headline CTC. Do not count a conditional bonus as guaranteed monthly income.

The calculator’s first-year result deducts both recurring monthly costs and one-time switching costs from the annual take-home increase. It does not assign a monetary value to work culture, role quality, learning, job security, working hours or career growth, which should be assessed separately.

Salary negotiation checklist

  • Compare fixed pay, variable pay and guaranteed bonuses separately.
  • Ask for the estimated monthly take-home under your chosen tax regime.
  • Check employer PF, gratuity and insurance included inside CTC.
  • Consider additional commute, rent and relocation expenses.
  • Check appraisal cycle, probation terms and notice period.
  • Compare leave policy, working days, remote-work flexibility and working hours.
  • Value ESOPs conservatively unless liquidity and vesting are clear.

Frequently asked questions

How is hike percentage calculated?

Subtract old CTC from new CTC, divide the increase by old CTC and multiply by 100.

What is a 30% hike on ₹6 lakh CTC?

₹6 lakh × 30% is ₹1.8 lakh. The target CTC is therefore ₹7.8 lakh.

Should I compare CTC or take-home salary?

Compare both. CTC is useful for package negotiation, while take-home shows the recurring cash actually available to you.

Can a higher CTC give lower take-home pay?

Yes. A different salary structure, variable pay, employer-side benefits, deductions or tax treatment can reduce the regular in-hand amount.

Does the calculator include income tax?

No. Enter the take-home estimates supplied by the employers or calculated separately. This keeps the comparison usable across tax years and salary structures.

What costs should I include when changing jobs?

Include incremental commute, rent, meals, relocation, notice-period buyout and other costs that arise only because of the new job.
