Income Tax Return documents are commonly required for home loans, visa processing, personal loans, credit card applications and other financial purposes. However, many taxpayers are confused about which document should be submitted—ITR acknowledgement, complete ITR form or income tax computation.

The complete ITR form may contain 60 to 70 pages, particularly in the case of ITR-2 or ITR-3. A bank officer, visa processing team or credit department may not have sufficient time to review every schedule. Therefore, a professional income tax computation is generally prepared to present the complete income and tax summary in one to three pages.

ITR Acknowledgement, ITR Form and Computation

These documents are connected with the same Income Tax Return, but their purpose and contents are different.

Document Information Available Typical Length
ITR acknowledgement Total income, tax payable, taxes paid and refund Usually one page
Complete ITR form Detailed schedules and information reported in the return May extend to 60–70 pages
Income tax computation Source-wise income, deductions, tax calculation, TDS and final payable or refund Usually one to three pages

ITR Acknowledgement

The ITR acknowledgement is the basic receipt generated after filing and verification of the return. It normally shows the taxpayer’s total income, tax payable, taxes paid and refund amount, wherever applicable.

However, it does not provide a detailed breakup of income. By reading only the acknowledgement, a bank or visa authority may not be able to identify whether the income relates to:

  • Salary;
  • House property or rental income;
  • Business or profession;
  • Capital gains;
  • Bank interest;
  • Dividend income; or
  • Other sources.

Complete ITR Form

The complete ITR form contains the detailed information filled in different schedules of the return. It may include salary details, business income, capital gains, deductions, bank accounts, tax payments and other disclosures.

Although this document contains complete information, it can be lengthy and difficult to review. This is the main reason financial institutions often require a clear computation summary along with the final acknowledgement.

Income Tax Computation

An income tax computation is a professionally prepared summary of the figures reported in the ITR. It presents the taxpayer’s complete income and tax position in a simple and readable format.

A proper computation normally includes:

  • Income under each applicable head;
  • Gross total income;
  • Deductions claimed;
  • Total taxable income;
  • Income tax calculation;
  • Interest or fee, wherever applicable;
  • TDS and taxes paid;
  • Tax payable or refund.

How to Download a Previous Year’s ITR

To download an Income Tax Return for any previous assessment year, log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal using your PAN and password.

After logging in, follow this path:

e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns

The View Filed Returns section displays the returns filed for different assessment years. Depending on the return and filing method, the following options may be available:

Download Option Purpose
Download Receipt Downloads the ITR acknowledgement
Download Form Downloads the complete ITR form
Download JSON Provides structured return data
Download Intimation Downloads the processing intimation, where available

The acknowledgement and complete ITR form are officially available from the portal. However, the income tax computation generally has to be prepared separately.

Manual Method of Preparing an ITR Computation

The traditional method is to prepare the computation manually in Excel or Word. Figures must be taken from the relevant schedules of the complete ITR form and entered under the correct heads.

The computation may include salary income, rental income, business income, capital gains, bank interest, dividend income, deductions, TDS and taxes paid.

This method provides full control over the format, but every figure must be entered carefully. A mistake in copying income, deductions or tax details may create a difference between the computation and the filed return.

Business owners and professionals who require proper income records before preparing the computation may consider TaxClear’s accounting and finalisation services.

Smart Method: Preparing the Computation from an ITR JSON File

A faster method is to prepare the computation using the JSON file of the filed return.

First, download the JSON file for the relevant assessment year. The file can then be uploaded to an AI tool capable of reading structured data, such as Claude AI or ChatGPT.

A detailed prompt should instruct the AI tool to:

  • Extract all income details from the JSON;
  • Classify income under the correct heads;
  • Present deductions separately;
  • Calculate and display the tax summary;
  • Show TDS and taxes paid;
  • Prepare the output in a professional format; and
  • Generate an editable Word or DOC file.

In the expert demonstration, Claude AI produced a properly formatted Word document after reading the JSON file. ChatGPT could also generate a computation summary, although the formatting might require some manual correction.

The editable document allows headings, spacing and presentation to be improved. However, the figures should not be changed unless they are first verified with the filed ITR.

Important 2026 Update for ITR Verification

CBDT Notification No. 51/2026 applies to returns filed for Assessment Year 2026-27 and substitutes the prescribed ITR-V and ITR acknowledgement formats. The updated ITR-V clearly states: “This is not an evidence for having filed the return of income, as verification is pending.”

The practical impact is important. An unverified ITR-V should not be treated as the final filing acknowledgement for a bank, loan or visa application. The return must first be verified through an approved mode. After successful verification, the final ITR acknowledgement should be downloaded and used with the computation.

What Should Be Submitted for Bank or Visa Purposes?

For home loan, visa, personal loan or credit card documentation, a practical set of documents generally includes:

  • Final verified ITR acknowledgement; and
  • Professional income tax computation.

The complete ITR form may also be provided where it is specifically requested. The computation does not replace the filed return. It only converts the detailed return information into a concise and easily understandable summary.

Before submission, always ensure that the income, deduction, TDS, tax payable and refund figures in the computation exactly match the filed Income Tax Return.
