From Tax Year 2026-27, Form 168 is the Income-tax Department’s annual information statement under the Income-tax Act, 2025. It is the new form of the Annual Information Statement (AIS), which taxpayers use to review information reported against their PAN.

The transition is year-specific. For FY 2025-26 and AY 2026-27, the existing AIS framework under the Income-tax Act, 1961 continues to apply. Form 168 covers Tax Year 2026-27, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.

What is Form 168?

The Income-tax Department prepares Form 168 using information reported by employers, banks, deductors, mutual funds, stockbrokers, registrars and other entities. Taxpayers do not file it themselves.

The statement is linked to your PAN and may include:

  • TDS and TCS information;
  • Advance tax, self-assessment tax and other tax payments;
  • Specified financial transactions (SFT);
  • Demand and refund details; and
  • Information about pending and completed proceedings.

The statement can be updated as reporting entities’ information is filed and processed. A recent payment or transaction may take time to appear.

Which statement should you check?

Choose the statement for the period covered by your income and return.

Period Statement to review
FY 2025-26 / AY 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 1961 Existing AIS and relevant tax-credit information
Tax Year 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act, 2025 Form 168, the new annual information statement

Form 168 and AIS provide reported information; neither replaces your income tax return. Report your actual taxable income even if it is missing from the statement.

TaxClear’s AIS, TIS and Form 26AS reconciliation guide explains how to compare these records before filing.

How to view Form 168

When the statement is available for the relevant tax year:

  1. Sign in to the Income-tax e-Filing portal using your PAN-linked account.
  2. Open AIS from the dashboard or through the e-File section.
  3. Select Tax Year 2026-27 and open the available statement.
  4. Compare the entries with your records and download a copy for reference.

The portal may show separate statements for AY 2026-27 and Tax Year 2026-27. Select the one that matches the income you are reporting.

What to check before filing

Compare Form 168 with your records, such as:

  • Salary certificates and payslips;
  • Bank and deposit interest statements;
  • Dividend, mutual fund and securities statements;
  • Property and other reported transactions;
  • TDS/TCS certificates and tax-payment challans; and
  • Any demand, refund or proceeding information shown.

An entry in the statement is not automatically taxable income. Match transactions reported by a bank or broker to your own records and determine their tax treatment. Also check for duplicate entries so you do not report the same income twice.

Do not assume the statement contains everything. Include taxable income that is not shown and keep the documents supporting your return. See TaxClear’s online ITR filing guide for AY 2026-27 for the return-preparation process.

What if information is incorrect?

If an entry is incorrect, duplicated or unrelated to you, submit feedback through the AIS section of the portal. Select the transaction, choose the applicable feedback reason and submit it.

Keep supporting evidence, such as bank statements, contract notes, payment records or correspondence with the reporting entity. Feedback may take time to process, and the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) may update after the department processes it. Submitting feedback does not by itself change the tax treatment of an item or remove your responsibility to report income correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to file Form 168?

No. The Income-tax Department generates it from information reported by other entities.

Does Form 168 replace AIS for AY 2026-27?

No. AY 2026-27 relates to FY 2025-26 under the earlier Act. Form 168 applies to Tax Year 2026-27 under the new Act.

Is every transaction in Form 168 taxable?

No. Review each entry against your records and determine its tax treatment under the applicable rules.

Should I report income missing from Form 168?

Yes. Report actual taxable income even if it does not appear in the statement.

Can I change an entry in Form 168 myself?

You can submit feedback through the portal. The reporting entity may need to correct its information, and the department must process the feedback before the statement changes.
